I mark up drafts the way a good editor does: questions, cuts, "more of this" — and the student does the rewriting. The voice stays uniquely theirs.

Essay season usually overlaps with SAT/ACT season — one tutor keeps the whole fall coordinated instead of competing for your student's evenings.
No — full stop. Admissions readers are professionally good at spotting adult prose in a teenager's application, and a ghostwritten essay is a risk, not a shortcut.
I draw the real story out, coach the drafts, and edit in a way that makes your student sound like their best, true self.
The summer before senior year is the sweet spot — drafts get written before school and deadlines pile on top.
Juniors sometimes start in spring with brainstorming. Later starts are workable too; the process compresses, but the steps stay the same.
The Common App personal statement — 650 words — plus each school’s supplemental essays, and for UC applicants the four Personal Insight Questions at 350 words each.
The supplementals multiply fast; a typical list means a dozen or more short pieces. Planning them as a portfolio, with reusable material, is half the strategy.
Specificity. The essays that work are small, true stories only your student could tell — not resumes retold in paragraphs and not grand statements about changing the world.
My first job is helping them find that story. Students always have one; they’ve usually just dismissed it as "not impressive enough." That instinct is almost always wrong.
