Two skills decide history grades: knowing the causal story, and writing about it in a timed environment. I teach both — the second one is why my English degree matters.

Primary sources are written in someone else's century. We practice reading them fast and mining them for evidence.
DBQs and LEQs are rubric games — thesis, documents, outside evidence, complexity. We train each point separately, then assemble.

History's essay writing skills overlap with English and writing — one tutor covers them all.
No — memorization is the symptom, not the subject. History sticks when it's taught as chains of causes: this happened because of that, and it mattered because of this.
Students who learn the story stop needing to memorize most of the dates — the sequence carries them. What we drill instead is the type of thinking the tests actually reward.
The document-based question: read a stack of primary sources, then build an essay argument from them under time. It’s the heart of AP history scoring.
